Up to 500 Million KRW Compensation Per Person for Resident Damage Caused by Dobong-gu Facilities

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) subscribes annually to the ‘Liability Insurance for Public Facilities’ with the Korea Local Government Mutual Aid Association to prepare for safety accidents involving residents.

The ‘Liability Insurance for Public Facilities’ is a system that allows residents to receive compensation through an insurance company when legal liability arises due to management defects in facilities managed by Dobong-gu that cause damage to residents’ bodies or property.

Facilities covered by the liability insurance include approximately 1,300 sites such as △dong community centers △parks △senior citizen centers △public parking lots △youth facilities △public restrooms △sculptures △lifelong learning centers △roads managed by the district △street trees within the district.

The compensation limits are set according to the type of facility. For bodily injury, the maximum compensation per accident is 10 billion KRW, with a maximum of 500 million KRW per person. For property damage, compensation is up to 10 billion KRW per accident.

The compensation payment procedure is as follows: residents who suffer damage file a claim for compensation with the district office’s facility management department; the district reports the accident to the Korea Local Government Mutual Aid Association; then the association processes the claim through a specialized insurance company and pays the insurance benefits.

Last year, 29 cases of compensation were paid to residents due to damage to district facilities, totaling 39,465,000 KRW.

An official from the district stated, “By subscribing to the liability insurance for public facilities again this year following last year, Dobong-gu is able to prepare for unforeseen damages to residents, and we will continue to strive to ensure residents can live in a safe environment.”
