[2020 Academy] 'Buje's Memory' Short Documentary Award Missed
[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] Director Lee Seung-jun's film Memories of Absence failed to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the winner in the short documentary category at the 92nd Academy Awards held on the 9th (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, USA. The award went to director Carol Dysinger's Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl).
Memories of Absence was the only foreign language film nominated in this category but did not win. The film lists on-site footage and call records from the Sewol ferry disaster, raising questions about the absence of the state. It proves that the tragedy occurred due to inadequate rescue efforts and states, "On that day, in that sea, the nation we believed in was not there."
