Three Koreans Arrested for Informing on 'Filipino Korean Businessman Shot Dead' 5 Years Ago
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Three Korean suspects who orchestrated a murder during the 2015 'Philippine Korean Murder Case' were caught by the police after five years.
The National Police Agency announced on the 9th that they arrested three Koreans, including Mr. A, who orchestrated the murder of a Korean businessman in his 60s in the Philippines, and sent them to the prosecution on charges of murder orchestration.
Mr. A and others are suspected of orchestrating the murder of a businessman in his 60s that occurred at a hotel in Angeles, Philippines, on September 17, 2015. The victim was shot and killed. At the time, the Philippine police arrested a local suspect, but it was revealed to be a wrongful arrest, and the case seemed to fall into a dead end.
However, the Korean police dispatched locally in the Philippines (Korean Desk), who respond to crimes involving Koreans, obtained clues through continuous inquiries that a Korean orchestrator was behind the murder case. Accordingly, the Foreign Affairs Bureau of the National Police Agency assigned the case to the International Crime Investigation Division 3 of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in 2018 and launched a reinvestigation.
The investigation team conducted joint investigations twice with the Philippine police in 2018 and identified the orchestrators. After obtaining arrest warrants, the police confirmed that the key suspect was residing in the Philippines and succeeded in arresting Mr. A last month in cooperation with the Philippine Immigration Office. Mr. A was forcibly repatriated to Korea the day after his arrest, and two other suspects residing in Korea were additionally arrested.
