Preliminary Candidate Lee Seok-hyung: "Urgent Need to Enact the 'Anti-Discrimination Act'"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Lee Seok-hyung, a preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea in Gwangsan-gap, Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated on the 7th, "Recently, as new coronavirus infections have occurred in the Gwangju area, hate speech that induces regional conflicts and discrimination, mainly on certain internet sites, has rapidly increased," and added, "I will strive for the prompt enactment of the 'Anti-Discrimination Act,' which has been under discussion since 2007, to stop hate and discrimination."
The 'Anti-Discrimination Act' is a law that prohibits all kinds of unreasonable discrimination to protect individual human rights. In advanced countries such as the United States and Europe, various forms of the 'Anti-Discrimination Act' have been enacted since the late 19th century, and the United Nations has continuously recommended the Korean government to enact such a law.
In South Korea, since the Ministry of Justice announced the legislative notice in 2007, the bill has been proposed three times but has either failed or is still pending.
Preliminary candidate Lee Seok-hyung said, "Hate speech with regional discrimination by certain internet sites and some political forces is going too far," and urged, "Stop baseless rumors and fake news immediately, and let us pool wisdom to strengthen efforts in new coronavirus quarantine work, prevention, and treatment."
