An Jun-no Preliminary Candidate's Pledge to Legislate Farmer's Allowance Draws Attention
Strengthening Food Security and Expanding Universal Welfare for Marginalized Rural Farming and Fishing Communities
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Ahn Junnno, a preliminary candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea (Gwangyang City, Gokseong County, Gurye County), is attracting the attention of farmers and fishermen nationwide by pledging to legislate the 'Farmer's Allowance'.
According to candidate Ahn on the 6th, looking at the grain self-sufficiency rate indicators announced over the past three years (2015-2017), Korea's grain self-sufficiency rate is 23%, which is extremely low compared to the world average of 101.5%, making countermeasures urgently needed.
Candidate Ahn diagnosed that since 77% of the grains consumed in Korea are imported, a red alert has been triggered for food security.
Candidate Ahn expressed concern, saying, "In a serious food security situation, national disasters with high infectivity such as the foreign exchange crisis or the recently rampant novel coronavirus could cause a crisis greater than war."
He added that the ratio of agricultural subsidies to total agricultural production also needs improvement.
Candidate Ahn stated, "At the national level, broad and universal legislation is needed to reduce the burden on local governments and minimize the alienation of farmers."
