First Public Opposition to 'TK Purge' from Korean Party... Kim Kwang-rim Says "People Are Asking If We're Fools"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Discontent among incumbent lawmakers in Daegu and Gyeongbuk (TK) has finally erupted over the Liberty Korea Party’s Nomination Management Committee’s policy to 'expand the replacement scale in TK.' Kim Kwang-rim (3-term, Andong-si, Gyeongbuk), a party supreme council member, openly opposed this at the party’s supreme council meeting on the 6th, stating, "The baseless and unexplained call for a purge has led to headlines in local media questioning, 'Is TK a doormat?'"
Supreme council member Kim began by saying, "I would like to convey the public sentiment of the TK region and offer suggestions to the Nomination Committee and the Supreme Council."
He said, "TK currently has the highest support rate for the Liberty Korea Party and is most outraged by the Moon Jae-in administration’s failures and double standards. Although the population of this region is only 5 million, accounting for 10% of the nation, it contributes 30% of the party’s responsible members and party dues, actively participating in the struggle against the government."
Kim criticized, "All past leaders have visited Seomun Market in Daegu during difficult times, pleading to protect our party, and the leadership present here all acknowledged at the party convention that 'TK is the heart of conservatism.' However, now there is even talk of wiping out all incumbent lawmakers in TK, shaking public sentiment." He emphasized, "Every election season, baseless and unexplained calls for a TK purge appear, with headlines in local media asking, 'Is TK a doormat?' and 'Is TK a colony?'"
He pointed out, "Among the 19 incumbent lawmakers in TK, 63%, or 12 members, are first-term lawmakers. This means the replacement rate of TK incumbents in the 20th nomination was 63%. The replacement rate for incumbents nationwide excluding TK was 19%."
Kim criticized, "Despite this, reports indicate that in the 21st nomination, the cut-off rate for incumbents will again exceed the national average. Without knowing the criteria for why more replacements are necessary, mysterious hit lists and high replacement rate figures are leaking through the media."
He stressed, "TK is ready to silently comply with any decision made in the party’s name based on fair standards and transparent procedures. Therefore, when stricter standards are applied to verify candidates in TK, the reasons, criteria, and the procedures and methods for decision-making must be clearly presented."

Kim also said, "The purpose of nominations is to win. Cut-offs themselves are not the purpose of nominations. I hope the nominations will be about innovation and reform, not exclusion and division."
