Lee Hae-chan "New Coronavirus, Economic Policy Important... Considering Tax Audit Postponement for SMEs"
[Asia Economy Reporters Wondara and Jeon Jinyoung] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, requested the economic ministries to postpone tax audits on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as corporate damages are expected due to the novel coronavirus infection (Wuhan pneumonia) outbreak.
On the morning of the 5th, at the first high-level meeting of the ruling party, government, and administration held at the National Assembly to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Lee said, "It is a particularly important situation for establishing economic policies," adding, "Yesterday, after meeting many SMEs with our lawmakers, I heard many requests to postpone tax audits for the time being. I hope the economic ministries will consider (postponing tax audits)."
He continued, "Please promptly implement measures to secure parts supply produced in China, and especially prepare proactive support measures for small self-employed businesses that are directly impacted."
Lee also emphasized the need to strengthen the status of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and to establish a National Virus Research Institute.
He said, "It seems there are limitations to effective response under the current Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention system," adding, "It is necessary to strengthen the role and status of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to enhance crisis response capabilities and to expand quarantine personnel such as those involved in prevention and epidemiological investigations."
He further added, "Basic research necessary for developing preventive vaccines and treatments should be undertaken by the state, and I think we should consider establishing a National Virus Research Institute with basic research capabilities."
