Hyundai Motor Sells 304,076 Units in January... Strong Performance of Hybrid Vehicles Domestically
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 3rd that it sold a total of 304,076 vehicles worldwide in January. Domestic sales recorded 47,591 units, down 21.3% compared to the same period last year, while overseas sales increased by 0.6% to 256,485 units.
Last month, domestic sales were led by the Grandeur. The Grandeur sold a total of 9,350 units, including 2,467 hybrid models. Following were the Sonata (including 1,012 hybrid models) with 6,423 units and the Avante with 2,638 units, with the three sedan models totaling 18,691 units sold.
Recreational Vehicle (RV) sales recorded a total of 13,769 units, including 5,173 Palisades, 3,204 Santa Fes, and 1,835 Konas.
Despite a decrease in working days due to the Lunar New Year holiday, the sales growth of hybrid models was remarkable. Compared to the same period last year, the Sonata hybrid model nearly quadrupled its sales (270 units → 1,012 units), and the Ioniq hybrid and Grandeur hybrid models also increased sales by 40.9% and 0.7%, respectively. As a result, total hybrid vehicle sales increased by 43.5% year-on-year to 4,069 units.
Commercial vehicles recorded 10,128 units for small commercial vehicles, combining Grand Starex and Porter, while large commercial vehicles, including medium and large buses and trucks, sold 2,003 units.
Premium brand Genesis posted sales of 1,186 units of the G80, 830 units of the G90, and 637 units of the G70. The GV80, Genesis’s first sports utility vehicle (SUV), which launched in the domestic market on the 15th of last month, continued its popularity by approaching 20,000 cumulative contracts within just 10 working days.
A Hyundai Motor official said, “Despite the impact of the Lunar New Year holiday, our core models played their roles well and significantly contributed to driving domestic sales performance,” adding, “We will focus company-wide capabilities on the smooth sales of the GV80 and Palisade, which continue to enjoy sensational popularity in the market, and aim to expand sales in the domestic market.”
In overseas markets last month, sales increased slightly by 0.6% year-on-year to 256,485 units. This was due to strong sales in North America, Central and South America, and the Asia-Middle East regions.
