Dobong-gu Provides Maternal and Newborn Health Care Co-Payment Support to All Families with Newborns
Support for up to 90% of the Out-of-Pocket Cost for 'Sanmo·Sinsaeng-a Health Care Service' (Up to 300,000 KRW)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) will expand support for the out-of-pocket expenses for maternal and newborn health care services starting in 2020 to promote healthy postpartum care and newborn nurturing.
The "Maternal and Newborn Health Care Support Service" is a program where professionally trained maternal and newborn health care workers visit families after childbirth to assist the mother's health recovery and care for the newborn.
Eligible recipients are families who have resided in Dobong-gu for more than six months, and up to 90% of the out-of-pocket expenses (maximum 300,000 KRW) will be supported.
Government subsidies have been provided to all childbirth families regardless of income since July 2018, but the burden of the "out-of-pocket expenses" remained.
In 2019, for those with an income below 100% of the median income, out-of-pocket expenses of 100,000 to 120,000 KRW were supported depending on whether it was the first or second child. However, in 2020, support will be expanded to all childbirth families using the service regardless of income, covering 90% of the out-of-pocket expenses (up to 300,000 KRW). However, basic livelihood security recipients or near-poverty groups will have their out-of-pocket expenses fully covered.
Applications can be submitted to the public health center within three months after the service ends by the mother, along with the out-of-pocket payment receipt issued by the maternal helper service provider and a copy of the bankbook.
Currently, there are seven maternal and newborn health care service providers in Dobong-gu, with 136 health care workers employed.
As the demand for appropriate postpartum care through maternal and newborn health care services increases every year, Dobong-gu has independently secured a budget of 337.5 million KRW for the 2020 maternal and newborn health care project.
Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu said, "About 1,100 mothers are expected to benefit from this support, and the district will take the lead in reducing the financial burden of postpartum health care." He added, "We will continue various supports to make Dobong-gu a good place to give birth and raise children."
