Trump Support Base Stirring... No Impact from Impeachment Proceedings
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] American voters appear to acknowledge the impeachment charges against President Trump but believe he should not be removed from office. The gap in hypothetical matchups between President Trump and leading Democratic presidential candidates is also narrowing. This is seen as an example showing that despite the impeachment process, President Trump's support base is strengthening ahead of the start of the U.S. presidential race, which begins with the Iowa caucus scheduled for the 3rd.
According to a poll jointly conducted by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and NBC News on the 2nd, 46% of respondents said the Senate should impeach President Trump and remove him from office, while 49% said President Trump should serve out his full term. Although within the margin of error, there were more opinions favoring the continuation of President Trump's presidency.
Regarding this survey, WSJ reported that despite the impeachment trial in the House and Senate, President Trump's position has not changed significantly and, rather, his support base has been strengthened.
WSJ analyzed that in January, 46% supported President Trump's administration, and 51% opposed it, showing little change compared to polls during his term, and especially, the approval rating of those who strongly support President Trump reached a record high of 36%.
It is also encouraging that the gap in hypothetical one-on-one matchups between President Trump and leading Democratic candidates has narrowed.
In hypothetical one-on-one matchups with President Trump, former Vice President Joe Biden maintained a 6 percentage point lead (50% to 44%), Senator Bernie Sanders a 4 percentage point lead (49% to 45%), and Senator Elizabeth Warren a 3 percentage point lead (48% to 45%).
Compared to a survey conducted last October, where Biden led by 9 percentage points, Warren by 8 points, and Sanders by 7 points in hypothetical matchups against President Trump, it has been confirmed that Trump’s support base has actually consolidated through the impeachment trial.
The U.S. Senate vote on President Trump's impeachment is scheduled for the 5th (local time). Since the adoption of former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton as a witness has already failed, the rejection of impeachment is also considered certain.
