This Year’s Smartphone Sales Grow 3%... 5G Accounts for 12% of Total
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] With the expansion of 5G adoption this year, global smartphone sales are expected to grow by 3%. The share of 5G in total mobile phone sales is estimated to be 12%.
According to market research firm Gartner on the 28th (local time), global smartphone sales in 2020 are estimated to reach 1.57 billion units, a 3% increase compared to the previous year. Last year, smartphone sales recorded a decline for the first time since 2008 due to oversupply and extended replacement cycles.
Annette Zimmerman, Vice President of Gartner's research division, said, "2019 was a challenging year for smartphone sellers," adding, "In 2020, market recovery is expected as more countries adopt 5G networks." It is anticipated that those who had delayed purchasing smartphones while waiting for price reductions will now make purchases.
This year, 5G mobile phone sales are expected to surpass 221 million units, accounting for 12% of total mobile phone sales. Next year, this number is projected to more than double to 489 million units. Vice President Zimmerman stated, "The commercialization of 5G will accelerate," and predicted that "with the release of 5G phones priced under $300, the annual growth rate of 5G phone sales will surpass that of 4G phones."
