WHO Secretary-General Expresses Confidence in China's Ability to Control Wuhan Pneumonia
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed confidence in China's ability to control the novel coronavirus infection (Wuhan pneumonia).
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on the 28th (local time), Director-General Ghebreyesus made these remarks during a meeting with Wang Yi (王毅), State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, in Beijing. He also reportedly highly praised the series of measures the Chinese government has taken so far.
Regarding the withdrawal of nationals from Wuhan being pursued by some countries, Director-General Ghebreyesus stated that WHO does not take such measures and urged maintaining a calm attitude without overreacting.
Arriving in Beijing the previous day, Director-General Ghebreyesus met with Chinese health officials to gather information on the novel coronavirus and discuss quarantine and patient treatment measures.

Based on the results of this visit to China, Director-General Ghebreyesus is expected to decide whether to declare a 'Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)' regarding the spread of the novel coronavirus.
