Over 50,000 New Students at Seoul High Schools... 3.5% Decrease Compared to Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The number of freshmen entering general high schools in Seoul, including autonomous public high schools, has decreased to just over 50,200 compared to last year.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on the 28th, a total of 50,248 students were assigned to 205 high schools selected by the superintendent this year, a 3.5% (1,848 students) decrease from 52,096 last year.
Although Gyeongmun High School, which was an autonomous private high school (Jasago), converted to a general high school and was included in the latter high schools, the Office of Education explained that the number of students subject to high school assignment also decreased due to the decline in the school-age population. The percentage of students assigned to the schools they hoped for when submitting their application forms was 89%.
By gender, there are 25,186 male students and 25,062 female students. Including 1,278 applicants for science-focused classes, the total number of general applicants is 49,409, with 663 special physical education students, 6 within-quota special cases, and 170 out-of-quota cases (children of veterans, physically disabled, special cases) included.
The total number of students who initially applied to the latter high schools was 59,059. Among them, 8,417 students who were accepted to autonomous private high schools, foreign language high schools, and international high schools, and 246 students accepted to arts and physical education focused classes, totaling 8,811, were excluded from the assignment, and 148 students with poor grades were rejected.
