Both States Considered Key to Early Momentum in Presidential Race
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Senator Bernie Sanders, considered a leading Democratic presidential candidate in the United States, is leading in support not only in Iowa but also in New Hampshire, according to recent polls.
US NBC News reported on the 26th (local time) that in a joint poll conducted with the Marriott School of Business, Senator Sanders recorded first place with 22% support.
Pete Buttigieg, Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, ranked second with 17%.
Following were former Vice President Joe Biden with 15%, Senator Elizabeth Warren with 13%, and Senator Amy Klobuchar with 10%.
The poll surveyed 697 likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire from the 20th to the 23rd of this month. The margin of error is ±4.5 percentage points.
Earlier, in a poll conducted by Boston public radio WBUR from the 17th to the 21st among 426 New Hampshire voters, Sanders also led with 29% support, followed by Mayor Buttigieg (17%), former Vice President Biden (14%), and Senator Warren (13%).
Senator Sanders is maintaining strong support in Iowa, where the Democratic primary race first begins.
The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 25th (local time) that in a poll conducted by Siena College from the 20th to the 23rd among 1,689 registered Iowa voters (margin of error ±4.8 percentage points), Sanders received the highest support at 25%. Mayor Buttigieg had 18%, former Vice President Biden 17%, and Senator Warren 15%.
The US presidential primary season kicks off with the Iowa caucuses on February 3 and the New Hampshire primary on February 11. These two states are considered crucial for candidates to gain early momentum.
However, in nationwide polls, former Vice President Biden still holds the lead.
In a poll conducted by The Washington Post (WP) and ABC News from the 20th to the 23rd among 388 Democratic voters and supporters (margin of error ±6 percentage points), former Vice President Biden led with 32% support, surpassing Senator Sanders at 23%. Senator Warren ranked third with 12%.
In the NBC-Marriott University poll, the top four Democratic candidates all showed higher support than President Donald Trump in hypothetical head-to-head matchups.
In these matchups, former Vice President Biden and Senator Sanders each led President Trump by 8 percentage points, Mayor Buttigieg by 10 points, and Senator Warren by 4 points.

The head-to-head matchups against President Trump were conducted among 2,223 New Hampshire voters during the same period. The margin of error is ±2.6 percentage points.
