Samsung and LG Launch 'AI Washing Machine' Battle After Lunar New Year Holiday
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expected to compete with new washing machine and dryer models in 2020 following the Lunar New Year holiday. The upcoming products are anticipated to focus on customer convenience features equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), following air conditioners.
According to industry sources on the 27th, Samsung Electronics will unveil the AI-powered washing machine and dryer "Grande AI" as early as the 29th. The company recently introduced Grande AI on its official YouTube channel, hinting at the possibility of customized washing and drying services based on consumer usage patterns.
The industry expects Samsung Electronics' Grande AI to be the second phase of "Project Prism." Project Prism is a new business strategy for Samsung Electronics' home appliances that aims to offer appliances reflecting diverse consumer tastes and personalities, much like a prism that breaks monotonous white light into various colors.
Last year, the company launched the "Bespoke" refrigerator under Project Prism, presenting a new business direction for Samsung Electronics' home appliances.
LG Electronics is also scheduled to unveil AI-equipped drum washing machines and dryers in the domestic market next month. The new LG dryer model features smart pairing technology linked to the LG ThinQ app, allowing it to receive washing course information from the washing machine and automatically set the drying course accordingly.
Additionally, it is reported that the service will include AI-based functions that monitor operational status to detect and notify users of potential malfunctions or necessary maintenance in advance.
