Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Launches 'Celebrating a Gender-Equal Holiday' Campaign
Promotion of Language Etiquette Campaign
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced on the 21st that it will conduct a campaign to promote a gender-equal Lunar New Year holiday.
The campaign encourages families gathered together without fixed gender roles to share holiday household chores such as food preparation, dishwashing, and cleaning, while being considerate of one another.
Following last Chuseok, the language etiquette campaign will continue this year as well. For example, instead of using terms like jangin-eoreun (father-in-law) or jangmo (mother-in-law), spouses’ parents are addressed as "Abeonim," "Abeoji" (father), or "Eomeonim," "Eomeoni" (mother), and children’s maternal grandparents are called "Harabeoji" (grandfather) and "Halmeoni" (grandmother).
National Healthy Family Support Centers and Multicultural Family Support Centers will also hold various family participation programs for the holiday. Programs include making tteokguk (rice cake soup), experiencing traditional village culture, and cooking dishes from different countries, allowing multicultural families to directly experience traditional culture.
