Pukyong National University Holds Event to Visit Canadian War Veterans
| "Moved by Korean Youth Who Have Not Forgotten Us Even After 70 Years"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yang Hee-jung] On the 16th (Korean time), 13 students from Pukyong National University’s Peace Volunteer Group 'UN Supporters' held a gratitude event at the Seafood Highlanders in Vancouver, Canada, inviting about 50 people including five Canadian veterans who participated in the Korean War over 70 years ago and families of fallen soldiers.
The Pukyong National University students expressed their gratitude with letters and songs prepared in advance in front of the veterans attending the event, and presented plaques of appreciation and souvenirs.
Mr. Mamoru Yamane (86), a Japanese-Canadian veteran who attended the event, said, “Even though a long time has passed, I am truly proud and thankful for the young students who have not forgotten us and came all the way to this distant place. Thanks to this event, I was also able to hear news of other veterans after a long time, which makes me very happy.”
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver also attended the event upon hearing the news of the visit by Korean youth. Consul Lee Kang-jun, who attended the event, personally awarded medals of appreciation to the veterans.
The UN Supporters, who held the gratitude event, is a volunteer group launched in 2009 to honor the spirit of sacrifice of the soldiers who gave their lives in the Korean War. Every year, along with overseas veteran gratitude events, they visit the UN Memorial Park next to Pukyong National University to lay flowers and carry out volunteer activities.
Canada dispatched about 27,000 troops to the Korean War, ranking third after the United States and the United Kingdom. Among them, 516 were killed in action, and the remains of 378 fallen soldiers are interred at the UN Memorial Park.
