Nowon-gu Secures 37.3 Billion KRW in Project Funds Through 2019 Public Contest

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) secured a total of 101 projects and approximately 37.34 billion KRW in 2020 project funds through evaluations and competitions conducted by central government ministries, Seoul City, and the private sector over the past year.

Compared to the previous year, the number of projects nearly doubled from 61 to about 2 times, and the project funds increased 4.4 times from approximately 6.92 billion KRW.

For competitive projects, the central government secured a total of 22 projects amounting to about 18.56 billion KRW (national funds 14.3 billion KRW, city funds 4.26 billion KRW), and Seoul City secured a total of 79 projects amounting to 18.78 billion KRW (national funds 4.3 billion KRW, city funds 14.48 billion KRW).

In particular, ▲ the construction of the Gureung-dong Community Sports Center (national funds 30 billion KRW, city funds 25.69 billion KRW required) ▲ the creation of Suraksan Natural Recreation Forest (national funds 43 billion KRW, city funds 21.5 billion KRW required) projects secured over 5 billion KRW each in advance, enabling the start of a work-life balance (Work-Life Balance) lifestyle.

Also, ▲ Our Neighborhood Care Center ▲ Residential Environment Improvement Project ▲ Health Subcenter Project secured over 1 billion KRW each, and in city-district joint cooperation projects, 290 million KRW was secured for 11 projects.

Nowon-gu received excellent evaluations in various unit project assessments by Seoul City. The hospital accompaniment service for sick children, the first of its kind nationwide, was selected as an excellent administrative case by the district, and policies such as the best district in community service investment evaluation and the best district in tabletop training competition received high praise.

Good evaluations were also received in the private sector. Nowon-gu won the grand prize in the ‘Korea Local Government Social Responsibility Index Evaluation’ and the ‘Manifesto Excellent Case Competition,’ and was ranked 2nd among 25 Seoul districts in the ‘2019 Korea Service Quality Index Administrative Service Sector.’

The ‘Korea Local Government Social Responsibility Index’ evaluates 16 metropolitan local governments and 226 basic local governments nationwide. Nowon-gu scored 164.11 points in the environmental sector, which consists of indicators such as waste (50), air quality, water quality, forest, and green space (70), energy and greenhouse gases (80), ranking first among local governments nationwide.

Also, in the ‘Manifesto Excellent Case Competition,’ which evaluates the goals and implementation of pledges among basic local government heads nationwide, Nowon-gu’s care projects such as the i-Hu Center and hospital accompaniment service for sick children were highly praised as measures to address ultra-aging and low birth rates, winning the grand prize in the ‘Ultra-Aging Response Sector.’

The 2019 Korea Service Quality Index Administrative Service evaluated nine areas including fundamental service, publicness, kindness, proactiveness, reliability, appropriateness, accessibility, convenience, and comfort by selecting citizens who have experience using local services. Nowon-gu received the second highest score among Seoul districts with 70.8 points out of 100.

In addition, last year the district was selected as the best in the first half of the year in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Local Finance Rapid Execution Evaluation, received the Minister of Science and ICT Award for Software Industry Protection, and was recognized as an excellent institution in the Korea Forest Service Government Joint Evaluation.
