G9, New Year's Resolution Product Analysis... Home Training and Diet Supplies Sales Jump Up to 13 Times
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] As the new year begins, the number of consumers aiming to take care of their health has increased, leading to a rise in sales of exercise equipment and related products.
According to G9, a trend-life shopping site operated by eBay Korea, sales of exercise and diet items from the 1st to the 13th of this month doubled (109%) compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, sales of self-development-related products decreased by 18% during the same period compared to last year, indicating that more people are prioritizing health over self-development as the new year of 2020 begins.
Looking at detailed items, health management exercise devices such as health and energy supplements saw a 684% surge in sales, spin bikes increased by 566%, and vibration exercise equipment rose by 120%. Influenced by the home training trend, indoor exercise equipment such as weight machines (39%), step boxes (1250%), balance trainers (500%), and gym balls (257%) also gained popularity.
Demand for sports goods aimed at health management is also increasing. During the same period, basketball equipment rose by 250%, soccer equipment by 167%, and table tennis and badminton increased significantly by 400% and 320%, respectively. It is analyzed that the resurgence of soccer and basketball fever through recent broadcasts, along with warmer weather than usual, has led to increased demand for outdoor exercise equipment.
Interest in self-health management products was also high. Scales (300%), blood pressure monitors (94%), eye health care products (142%), and nose and respiratory health products (239%) all showed upward trends. Low-frequency therapy devices increased by 266%, and blood glucose meters rose by 46%.
Sales of diet products also surged. While diet food sales increased by 45% overall, convenient products for weight control such as diet bars (476%), mango diet products (140%), and cleanse and lemon diet products (117%) were popular. In particular, products for managing specific body parts saw high demand, with abdominal care products increasing by 75% and arm care products by 400%.
Conversely, self-development-related products showed a downward trend. During the same period, self-development books decreased by 18%. Foreign language books (-6%), exam preparation and certification books (-30%), and self-development books (-36%) all showed declining trends. Smoking cessation products also saw a 10% decrease in sales during the same period.
Meanwhile, G9 is operating special exhibitions related to diet and exercise. The “Do I really need to diet?” exhibition features carefully selected foods and exercise equipment in sections such as dietary habits, exercise habits, and correct posture habits.
