Disappearing 'Paper Receipts'... Hyundai Department Store Introduces Electronic Receipt Issuance Service
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Hyundai Department Store is fully implementing the 'Electronic Receipt Issuance' service.
Hyundai Department Store announced on the 15th that it will introduce the electronic receipt issuance service at all 21 department stores and outlets by March, starting with three department stores (Pangyo Branch, D-Cube City, Kintex Branch) and two outlets (Hyundai Premium Outlet Songdo Branch, Hyundai City Outlet Dongdaemun Branch).
When purchasing products at each store, receipts will be automatically issued through a mobile app instead of the existing paper receipts. Through this, Hyundai Department Store aims to completely eliminate paper receipt issuance within the next three years.
The introduction of the electronic receipt issuance service is a follow-up measure after signing an agreement last August with the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and Ministry of Science and ICT to 'eliminate paper receipts.'
Electronic receipts are automatically issued without any separate settings for Hyundai Department Store Card members or group integrated membership 'H Point' members, and can be checked on the 'H Point' app and the 'Hyundai Department Store Mobile Card' app respectively.
The electronic receipt records all the information contained in the existing paper receipts, such as payment information and business place information, allowing services like 'participation in promotional events and parking fee settlement.'
Additionally, even customers who are not Hyundai Department Store members will have paper receipts eliminated when purchasing products. To this end, a 'mobile receipt service' will be introduced that sends receipts via text message by simply entering the customer's phone number during the payment process.
Hyundai Department Store expects that the introduction of this electronic receipt issuance service will eliminate unnecessary paper waste and the burden of waste disposal, thereby protecting the environment and minimizing concerns about environmental hormones and personal information leakage.
As of last year, about 160 million paper receipts were issued at Hyundai Department Store and Hyundai Outlet, which, considering the average length of a paper receipt (25 cm), is equivalent to circling the Earth once (about 40,000 km).
Hyundai Department Store explained that replacing these with electronic receipts is expected to have the same effect as planting about 1,700 trees of 30-year-old timber.
Along with this, the Hyundai Department Store Card subscription method will also be digitized. Instead of customers manually filling out paper membership application forms during registration, the information will be entered using smart devices.
Furthermore, paper price tags used for in-store discount information will be replaced with electronic price tags or digital display billboards.
