Human Rights Commission Returns Official Letter on 'Infringement of Rights of Jo Guk Family' Petition... "Sent by Blue House Mistake"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea announced on the 14th that it returned the official letter regarding the "human rights violations during the investigation of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk's family," which was sent by the Blue House.
The Human Rights Commission stated, "On the afternoon of the 13th, the Blue House informed us that the document related to the 'National Petition' was sent by mistake, so we returned it." It is currently unknown whether the Blue House meant that sending the document to the Human Rights Commission was a mistake or that there was an error in the document's composition during the sending and returning process.
The Human Rights Commission said that regardless of whether the Blue House sent or returned the official letter, it can independently investigate whether there were human rights violations against former Minister Cho's family and, if necessary, initiate an ex officio investigation.
On October 15 of last year, a petition was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board stating, "Since there were indiscriminate human rights violations during the prosecution's investigation of former Minister Cho and his family, the Human Rights Commission must thoroughly investigate this to ensure such incidents never happen again." This petition gathered 226,434 supporters over a month, meeting the official response criteria of the Blue House.
Kang Jeong-su, head of the Blue House Digital Communication Center, announced via the Blue House social network service (SNS) on the morning of the previous day, "The Blue House sent an official letter to the National Human Rights Commission under the name of the Chief Presidential Secretary, containing the petition content from the petitioner and the participating citizens." This official letter was received by the Human Rights Commission in electronic document form on the 9th.
