[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) will select rainwater drain environmental guardians again this year.
The "Rainwater Drain Environmental Guardian Project" is a program where senior citizens regularly inspect rainwater drains to restore their primary function and ensure drainage performance, providing a twofold benefit by also offering jobs to the elderly.
First implemented in 2019 with a total of 41 senior participants, the district announced that due to the high effectiveness of the project and the satisfaction of participating seniors, it will continue this year as well.
The number of rainwater drain environmental guardians selected in 2020 is a total of 63. Recruitment is limited to seniors aged 65 or older who receive the basic pension, and ongoing recruitment is conducted at the district office and local community centers.
Once selected as rainwater drain environmental guardians, teams of three will maintain rainwater drains clogged due to habitual littering in alleys, side streets, and areas with dense pedestrian traffic within the district.
This year, the project period has been extended by two months, running from February to December for a total of 11 months. Participants will work 3 hours per day, 30 hours per month, and receive a monthly activity allowance of 270,000 KRW.
During the winter season, working hours will be flexibly adjusted according to temperature, and cold-weather gear will also be provided.
The district expects that improving the drainage capacity of rainwater drains will not only prevent flooding but also provide vitality to seniors, economically assist them, and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
