Why Did Dongdaemun-gu Launch Consulting for Utilizing Space Inside Street Vendors?
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) is making various efforts to ensure safer and cleaner operation of local street vendors.
Last month, the district distributed one 'spray-type portable fire extinguisher' to each of the 114 street vendors whose permits were approved. This measure is to prepare for safety accidents during the winter season when fires frequently occur due to the use of heating devices and other fire sources.
The 'spray-type portable fire extinguisher' distributed by the district is lightweight (550g) and easy to use. Even relatively elderly street vendor operators can easily operate it, enabling quick response for initial fire suppression in case of fire.
Along with distributing fire extinguishers, the district guided street vendor operators on how to use and manage the extinguishers and urged them to pay attention to preventing safety accidents.
In addition, to help increase sales through efficient product display at street vendors, from the 20th to the 24th of last month, the district conducted 'Street Vendor Interior Space Utilization Consulting.' Targeting 78 newly installed street vendors, the consulting covered △ product display methods by item △ use of sales counters and appropriate display tools △ design and placement of price tags.
The district plans to continuously provide safety education to street vendor operators in the future to ensure the safety of both operators and pedestrians, and will keep encouraging street vendor operators to faithfully adopt the consulting improvement plans.
You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "I hope operators actively participate in creating safe and clean street vendors," and added, "We will continue to support so that the newly renovated street vendors can become landmarks of Dongdaemun-gu streets."
Previously, Dongdaemun-gu has made many efforts to improve street vendors that spoil the urban landscape and obstruct smooth pedestrian traffic. Since 2017, the district has built trust through meetings with street vendor groups, permit system business briefings, and over 80 continuous dialogues. Based on this, in June last year, the 'Street Vendor Permit System Agreement' was signed, and in September, the 'Dongdaemun-gu Street Vendor Operation Regulations' were established.
