Early Closure of Waste Landfill Site within Seongju Industrial Complex
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Yushin] Seongju-gun, Gyeongbuk announced on the 10th that it will close the waste landfill site within Seongju Industrial Complex, which has been abandoned for two and a half years.
The landfill has been operated by GM E&C since 2013, but has been left unused since June 2017. The waste accumulated underground and above ground at the landfill reached 427,700㎥, reaching saturation.
Seongju-gun issued several improvement and closure orders, but GM E&C did not comply, citing lack of operating profit.
Accordingly, Seongju-gun decided to proceed with the closure process from next month by requesting the Korea Environment Corporation together with the Daegu Regional Environmental Office. A planning team will be formed to expedite the closure.
