[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 10th that it has imposed fines totaling 4.14 trillion won on 51,807 illegally parked vehicles in school zones after conducting a special crackdown on illegal parking in these areas from August to the end of the year.
The city and 25 autonomous districts focused their enforcement efforts on 1,730 school zones across Seoul during peak hours of 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., when the risk of child traffic accidents is high. For illegally parked vehicles, a fine of 80,000 won was imposed, and 288 vehicles that obstructed traffic flow and required urgent relocation were towed.
According to the "Status of Child Traffic Accidents in School Zones" released by the National Police Agency, an average of one accident occurred every four days in school zones within Seoul over the past five years. Six children died, and 452 were injured.

The city stated, "Illegal parking prevents drivers from properly seeing passing children and pedestrians, making it a major cause of traffic accidents," adding, "By next year, we plan to install speed enforcement CCTV cameras around all elementary schools' school zones and will mobilize all administrative enforcement resources, including proactive measures against illegal activities, continuous crackdowns, and towing actions."
