Gangnam-gu Selected as an Excellent Institution in the '2019 Disaster Preparedness Regular Training' Evaluation
Minister of the Interior and Safety Commendation for Large Fire Drill on Train at Suseo Station... Creating a 'Safe and Disaster-Free Gangnam'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jung Soon-gyun) was selected as an excellent institution in the year-end evaluation of the '2019 Disaster Preparedness Regular Training' hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, following a complex disaster simulation conducted near Suseo Station in July last year.
The district conducted a complex disaster drill simulating a large fire on an SRT train entering Suseo Station, with smoke spreading to nearby apartments. Thirteen public institutions including Gangnam Fire Station, SR, Suseo-Gangnam Police Station, and five private organizations participated.
Gangnam-gu established and operated the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, Integrated Disaster Site Support Headquarters, On-site Emergency Medical Center, and Regional Accident Recovery Headquarters to establish a response system. They responded fully to the disaster situation by operating equipment such as emergency train stop and smoke ventilation systems in preparation for actual scenarios.
In particular, they reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding foreign injured persons and reviewed evacuation plans for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled.
Kim Seok-rae, Director of the Disaster Safety Division, said, “We will continue to acquire behavioral guidelines and damage minimization measures through drills in multi-use facilities and strive to realize a ‘Gangnam without human-caused disasters through hazard management.’”

The district is actively working to create a ‘disaster-free Gangnam’ by operating the nation’s first ‘non-stop dispatch system,’ where tow trucks immediately respond to secure fire truck access routes, and establishing 112 and 119 hotlines in 1,017 crime-vulnerable areas.
