Unknown Cause Pneumonia in Wuhan, China: One Symptomatic Case Reported in Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced on the 8th that one patient showing related symptoms (symptomatic person) has been identified in South Korea in connection with the cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown cause occurring in China.
According to the KCDC, the patient is a 36-year-old Chinese woman who visited Wuhan City, China, in mid-December last year and exhibited pneumonia symptoms. The KCDC confirmed that she did not visit the Huanan Seafood Market nor come into contact with wild animals. She is currently undergoing isolation treatment and testing, and her condition is reported to be stable.
Basic epidemiological investigation revealed that symptoms such as coughing and sore throat first appeared on the 31st of last month after her arrival, and she received medical care at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital on the 7th. During the examination, her travel history to Wuhan City and pneumonia findings were confirmed, and the case was reported to the KCDC. Upon receiving the report, the KCDC classified the patient as a "subject under investigation with symptoms" based on these factors. She was then transferred to a nationally designated inpatient treatment bed (Seoul National University Bundang Hospital) for isolation treatment and testing, while epidemiologists from the central government and Gyeonggi Province are conducting an epidemiological investigation.
Before isolation, she also received treatment at another hospital; however, the KCDC stated that no measures such as excluding the medical staff from duties or closing treatment areas have been taken yet. The respiratory virus panel test for nine types conducted by the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment returned negative results.

With the occurrence of a symptomatic patient, the KCDC held a crisis assessment meeting on the same day to discuss countermeasures. Based on the ongoing epidemiological investigation and the Chinese health authorities' announcement that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission yet, the interest level will be maintained as is. Previously, since the 3rd, the KCDC has been operating the "Wuhan City Unknown Cause Pneumonia Task Force" and running a 24-hour emergency response system.
