Ukrainian Passenger Plane Crashes in Iran... "All 176 Onboard Dead"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] A Boeing passenger plane belonging to a Ukrainian airline, which departed from Tehran, the capital of Iran, to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 176 passengers and crew on board.
According to Iranian media and AP, AFP, and TASS news agencies, at around 6 a.m. local time on the 8th, a Boeing 737-800 passenger plane operated by Ukraine International Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, Iran. The plane was reported to have 167 passengers and 9 crew members, totaling 176 people on board.
A spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development stated, "One of the engines of the accident aircraft caught fire immediately after takeoff from Imam Khomeini Airport, and subsequently, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, causing it to crash to the ground."
According to Iranian disaster authorities, all on board died. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reported via its official Facebook account that all passengers and crew were confirmed dead.
The plane crash occurred just hours after Iran launched ballistic missile attacks on U.S. military bases in Iraq.
Iranian authorities dispatched an investigation team to the crash site to examine the cause of the accident and assess the damage. Local rescue authorities announced that they found the aircraft's black box at the crash site on the outskirts of Tehran and handed it over to judicial authorities.
