SKT Unveils Next-Generation LiDAR, the 'Eyes' of Autonomous Vehicles
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] SK Telecom unveiled a prototype of the next-generation single-photon LiDAR developed in collaboration with global automotive electronics company Pioneer Smart Sensing Innovations (PSSI) at 'CES 2020,' held in Las Vegas, USA, starting on the 7th (local time).
LiDAR is a technology that projects laser beams onto targets to detect distances and various physical properties of objects, modeling them into 3D images. It plays a key role as the 'eyes' of autonomous vehicles.
The LiDAR unveiled this time is the world's first to combine SK Telecom's 1550nm wavelength laser module with PSSI's 2D ultra-compact precision mechanical (MEMS) mirror scanning technology. It is scheduled for commercialization in 2021.
SK Telecom explained that the 1550nm wavelength laser module uses stronger output than the existing 905nm wavelength laser, enabling accurate detection of long-distance targets up to 500 meters away. Additionally, because it receives light more sensitively, it can accurately detect objects with low light reflectivity, such as tires on the road or pedestrians wearing black clothes.
