Chosun University Goshiwon 'Hwanggeum Chugan' Renovated
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chosun University’s goshiwon ‘Hwanggeumchugwan’ has completed renovations and reopened.
On the 7th, according to Chosun University (President Min Youngdon), Hwanggeumchugwan, the university’s goshiwon, was built in May 2005 by Hwanggeumchu, chairman of Donggwang Construction Co., Ltd., who invested about 2 billion KRW and donated it to Chosun University free of charge to support talent development.
Marking the 15th anniversary of Hwanggeumchugwan’s opening, Chosun University invested about 300 million KRW in interior renovations, recently completed the construction, and held the reopening ceremony at 11 a.m. on the same day.
Through this renovation, the facility was reorganized from double occupancy rooms for 88 people to single occupancy rooms for 49 people. Old convenience facilities were significantly modernized, including individual air conditioning and heating units, a reading room, group study rooms, a multipurpose room, shower rooms, and a lounge.
The reopening ceremony was attended by Min Youngdon, President of Chosun University; Ko Youngyeop, Chair of the Faculty Council; Kim Junyeon, President of the Student Council; Hwanggeumchu, Chairman of Donggwang Construction; Moon Yongju, Vice Chairman of Donggwang Construction; Lee Jaejin, Vice President of the Law School Alumni Association; law school professors; and residents of Hwanggeumchugwan.
Hwanggeumchugwan is located with a forested walking trail behind the building and offers a panoramic view of the entire university campus and Gwangju city in front, making it an ideal place for Chosun University students to focus on their studies and cultivate a broad-minded spirit toward the future.
Chosun University Law School, which has produced distinguished legal professionals such as Supreme Court Justice Lee Seongryeol and human rights lawyer Lee Donmyeong, supports the studies of prospective legal professionals residing in Hwanggeumchugwan through its educational capabilities.
As a result, recently, Chosun University Law School has been producing graduates not only entering the legal profession through the law school and bar exam but also advancing into various professional fields such as certified public accountants, tax accountants, customs brokers, and labor attorneys.
Attorney Cho Hyungrae, an alumnus of Hwanggeumchugwan (Law Firm Beopseung), said, “Thanks to studying at Hwanggeumchugwan for four years, I was able to enter the law school I wanted immediately after graduation and pass the bar exam right away.” He added, “I hope that with the modernized facilities from today’s reopening, excellent legal talents will continue to be nurtured.”
Chairman Hwanggeumchu said, “I have been proud to see many outstanding talents emerge from Chosun University over the past 15 years,” and congratulated the reopening.
President Min Youngdon stated, “Chairman Hwanggeumchu has made a great contribution to our university with his passion for scholarship, resulting in the production of many talented individuals. As a member of Chosun University, I am immeasurably grateful,” and added, “I hope students study in a good environment, achieve excellent results, and bring honor to their alma mater.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Hwanggeumchu of Donggwang Construction, at the age of 80, passed the qualification exam and is scheduled to enroll as a freshman in the Department of Law at Chosun University’s College of Law and Social Sciences for the 2020 academic year.
