Russian Foreign Ministry: "Iran Nuclear Deal Still Valid"... Emphasizes US Responsibility
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that although Iran has effectively withdrawn from the nuclear agreement (JCPOA - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), the agreement is still valid and the parties involved need to make efforts to maintain it. This statement appears to defend Iran while placing the main responsibility for the collapse of the nuclear deal on the United States.
According to TASS news agency, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on the 6th (local time), "Iran's unavoidable decision to suspend its voluntary obligations under the nuclear agreement is the result of accumulated contradictions within the agreement, and the participating countries must continuously work to resolve these contradictions." It also emphasized, "There is no other effective remedy to save the nuclear agreement," and "Maintaining the comprehensive agreement and ensuring its continuous implementation should be the top priority for all parties to the agreement."
While emphasizing that the nuclear agreement is still valid and defending Iran, Russia also strongly raised the responsibility of the United States. The Russian Foreign Ministry argued, "Iran's declaration to suspend its nuclear agreement obligations must be viewed in the context of a series of events following the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in May 2018," and "The United States has launched large-scale attacks against countries complying with the nuclear agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2231, causing serious difficulties in implementing the nuclear agreement." UN Security Council Resolution 2231 was adopted in July 2015 shortly after the Iran nuclear deal and calls for refraining from actions that undermine the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement.
