Registration of Hide-and-Seek, Jump Rope, and Other Intangible Cultural Heritage in North Korea
North Korea has registered traditional folk games of our nation, such as hide-and-seek and jump rope, as national intangible cultural heritage. According to the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Workers' Party, on the 5th, the newly registered national intangible cultural heritage in North Korea includes folk games like tug-of-war, jump rope, and hide-and-seek, as well as the 24 solar terms customs related to labor and life.
The newspaper introduced tug-of-war as "a national sports event enjoyed by the people during folk holidays such as Jeongwol Daeboreum and Chuseok," adding that "it embodies the unity and strong spirit of our nation’s traditions and temperament." Regarding jump rope and hide-and-seek, it explained that "they are representative folk games that have been passed down for a long time and still add a national flavor to our daily lives today."
Traditional foods and dietary customs of Pyongyang, such as 'Daedonggang Mullet Soup' and 'Hoe-ryeong Baeksalgu,' were registered as regional intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, 'Nokui Hongsang' and 'Classical Time Acupuncture Method' were respectively included in the national intangible cultural heritage categories of 'Joseon Clothing Customs' and 'Acupuncture Treatment Methods.' Furthermore, the 'Mung Bean Pancake Custom' was renamed as 'Mung Bean Usage Customs,' which includes mung bean jelly, and 'Making Geondeongi Jeot' was renamed as 'Jeotgal Culture.'

Since Chairman Kim Jong Un took power, North Korea has been focusing on cultural heritage protection projects by adopting the 'National Heritage Protection Law' and establishing the 'Joseon National Heritage Protection Fund.' Thanks to these efforts, it has succeeded in registering UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity items such as 'Arirang,' 'Kimchi Making,' and 'Ssireum' (jointly registered by North and South Korea).
