On the 4th (Korean time), at the Kapalua Resort Plantation Golf Course (par 73, 7,518 yards) on Maui Island, Hawaii, USA, the second day of the PGA Tour's first event of the new year, the "Tournament of Champions" Sentry Tournament (total prize money $6.7 million), Schauffele surged with a 5-under-par to take the top spot on the leaderboard (9-under-par 137). Joaquin Niemann (Chile) and Patrick Reed tied for 2nd place (8-under-par 138), while Rickie Fowler (both USA) stood at 4th place (7-under-par 139).
Starting from a tie for 5th place, 3 strokes behind, Schauffele showed perfect play by making 5 birdies. He reduced 2 strokes in the front nine with birdies on holes 5 and 9, then added 3 more birdies on holes 13, 16, and 18 in the back nine. He relied on accurate tee shots with a fairway hit rate of 93.33% and "stingy putting" averaging 1.643 putts per hole. He recalls the thrilling memory of last year's final round when he shot 11-under-par to come from behind and win. This is his 5th PGA Tour victory overall.
