Unknown Cause Group Pneumonia in China... Patients Increase from 27 to 44
SARS Fear Recreated: 774 Deaths in 2002
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The number of pneumonia patients with unknown causes in China increased by 17, from 27 to 44, in just one day.
According to Chinese media including Xinhua News on the 3rd, Wuhan city health authorities announced that as of 8 a.m. that day, the number of patients diagnosed with pneumonia of unknown cause was counted at 44. Among them, 11 are in serious condition, while the health authorities added that the remaining patients are not in life-threatening condition.
Until the previous day, the number of patients was reported as 27, but concerns grew as nearly 20 patients increased in just one day. The health authorities also added that they are monitoring the health status of 121 people who had contact with the patients, in addition to confirmed cases.
Most of the patients are merchants at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, Hunan Province, which has been closed. Chinese health authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the pneumonia, but no clear conclusion has been reached yet.

As the number of pneumonia patients with unknown causes continues to rise, the possibility of a recurrence of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which caused many deaths in 2002-2003, is being mentioned in China. SARS, which started in southern China, caused 774 deaths in 37 countries within just two years. Among them, about 650 deaths occurred in China and Hong Kong.
