2020 is the Year of the Rat. Although it has a somewhat negative image, it is the first in the twelve zodiac signs, symbolizing opportunity and hope. The rat is an auspicious animal that brings good energy. It is praised for its wisdom and excellent survival skills when handling tasks. This is why people born in the Year of the Rat are particularly good at golf. Rat-born stars from 1972, 1984, and 1996 expressed confidence that "2020 will be my year."
Yang Yong-eun (48), known as the 'Son of the Wind,' is a representative figure. He is Asia's first major champion. In March 2009, he won his first victory on the U.S. PGA Tour at the Honda Classic, and in August, he caused a sensation by defeating then world No. 1 Tiger Woods (USA) at the PGA Championship. In 2006, he had already defeated Woods at the European Tour HSBC Champions, earning the nickname 'Woods Hunter.' Afterward, he faced a period of decline.
After nearly eight years without a win since the Korean Open in October 2010, he reached the top at the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) The Crowns in April 2018. At that time, he was 46 years, 3 months, and 14 days old, making him the oldest Korean player to win on the JGTO. Last year, he participated in 22 tournaments, finishing 3rd at the Daihyo Masters and entering the 'Top 10' three times, ranking 23rd in prize money (42.89 million yen). He is set to marry former announcer Kim Mi-jin in mid-month in Hawaii, USA. He renewed his determination, saying, "I will fulfill my role as the head of the family."
Lee Jeong-eun 6 (24, Daebang Construction) has a firm ambition to "make this the best year." She was the Rookie of the Year on the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour in 2016 and the first player to win six titles in 2017. In November 2018, she topped the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Qualifying (Q) Series and debuted on the U.S. stage the following year. In June last year, she immediately rose to the rank of 'major champion' at the U.S. Women's Open. She showed remarkable consistency by finishing in the 'Top 10' ten times in 25 tournaments.
After an unrivaled dominant run, she was named 'Rookie of the Year.' Since last month, she has been training in Haenam, Jeollanam-do. She will start competing from the Australian Women's Open in February. Her goal this year is to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August. She said, "I will work hard to step onto the Olympic stage." An Si-hyun (36) is a leading figure among 'mom golfers.' She is the original Cinderella who secured a direct ticket by winning the LPGA Tour CJ Nine Bridges Classic held in Korea in 2003.
