Seodaemun-gu Opens '2020 Seol Holiday Direct Market'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) is preparing a market to sell over 220 items of agricultural, livestock, and marine products, as well as holiday essentials, at prices 5-30% cheaper than market prices ahead of the Lunar New Year.

The district will hold the 2020 Lunar New Year Direct Transaction Market at the district office plaza from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 14th and 15th.

About 60 organizations from 26 cities and counties nationwide, including Seodaemun-gu’s sister cities Asan, Yeongdong, Wanju, Jangheung, and Jeju, as well as Chuncheon, Sokcho, Hongcheon, Taean, Seocheon, Hadong, Gangjin, and Wando, will participate.

The items range from Korean beef (Hanwoo), seaweed, wild greens, fruits, and rice to kimchi, salted seafood, fish, songpyeon (rice cakes), hangwa (traditional sweets), and nuts, allowing visitors to purchase various Lunar New Year goods at this direct transaction market.

In particular, Jangheung Hanwoo, Jeju Hallabong (citrus), and Wando seaweed will be sold at affordable prices to ease the shopping burden on residents.

At the direct transaction market, producers and producer groups sell local specialties directly without intermediaries, ensuring affordable, fresh, and trustworthy purchases.

Additionally, participating companies plan to voluntarily donate up to 5% of their sales revenue to the Community Chest of Korea to support neighbors in need, adding significance to the event.

The Seodaemun-gu Lunar New Year Direct Transaction Market is expected to be an event of ‘urban-rural coexistence,’ where residents can purchase quality products at low prices, and farmers and fishermen can promote local specialties and expand sales channels.
