Moon Bokyung, the infielder who led the South Korean national baseball team to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), is now suffering from an unexpected wave of malicious comments. Some Taiwanese fans, whose team was eliminated from the group stage due to South Korea's advancement, have flooded his social media with hostile messages.

On March 9, the South Korean national team dramatically secured a spot in the WBC quarterfinals by defeating Australia 7-2 in the final match of Group C held at Tokyo Dome in Japan. Previously, South Korea had been on the verge of elimination after consecutive losses to Japan and Taiwan, but managed to clinch a ticket to Miami, USA, by meeting the demanding requirement of "allowing no more than 2 runs and winning by at least 5 runs."

"Let's Go to Miami!" Over 10,000 Comments Flood the SNS of WBC Quarterfinal Hero

At the center of this victory was Moon Bokyung. He opened the scoring with a two-run home run over the right-center fence in the second inning, followed by a one-run double in the third. He continued to lead the offense with another RBI hit in the fifth inning. Moon Bokyung played a key role for the South Korean lineup in this tournament, recording 11 RBIs in the first round alone and ranking first among all WBC hitters in RBIs.

In the top of the ninth inning, Ahn Hyunmin's sacrifice fly made the score 7-2, further increasing South Korea's chances of advancing to the quarterfinals. With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the ninth, Moon Bokyung came to bat but struck out on three pitches. Even if South Korea had scored more runs and reached at least eight, if Australia scored three or more, Taiwan-which had a better minimum runs allowed rate-would have advanced to the quarterfinals. Therefore, South Korea had no need to score additional runs in that situation. After striking out, Moon Bokyung immediately took the field for defense against the Australian lineup, and South Korea closed out the game to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.

However, after the victory, something unexpected happened. When Moon Bokyung posted photos from the game on his social media along with the message "Let's go to Miami!", the post received more than 10,000 comments. The scene that some Taiwanese fans took issue with was this final at-bat. They criticized Moon Bokyung for what they viewed as a lackluster strikeout, accusing him of lacking sportsmanship. Taiwanese netizens left mocking and hostile comments such as, "Are you sleeping standing up?", "So disgraceful. No sportsmanship at all," "You'll never make it to the Major Leagues," and "Stay a frog in a well."

Unfair Criticism Over Final At-Bat Strikeout... Some Fans Offer Apologies and Call for Restraint

On the other hand, some Taiwanese fans apologized on behalf of their compatriots and called for restraint. One netizen wrote, "Congratulations to South Korea on reaching the quarterfinals. I apologize for the rude behavior of some Taiwanese fans." Another commented, "This is just sports. We should respect each other." Messages of support from South Korean fans also poured in, with comments like, "Stay strong, Moon Bokyung," "The best hitter in Korea," and "If you're getting hate because you played well, that's actually high praise."

Meanwhile, with this victory, South Korea advanced to the WBC quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years and will travel to Miami, Florida, USA. There, they will face the first-place team from Group D for a spot in the semifinals at 7:30 a.m. KST on March 14.
