Zohran Mamdani, a progressive politician in his 30s and an Indian-American Muslim, was elected as the mayor of New York City on the 4th (local time). Mamdani, age 34 and a New York State Assemblyman, achieved this victory despite former U.S. President Donald Trump openly calling for a unified anti-Mamdani front, foreshadowing potential future conflicts.
As the vote counting began after polls closed, the Associated Press reported at 9:37 p.m. Eastern Time that Mamdani had won the race.
Previously an almost unknown political newcomer, Mamdani caused a political upset by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York mayor last June, securing the Democratic nomination.

Mamdani, an Indian-American Muslim, became an icon representing the rise of progressive forces by pledging to improve the living conditions of New Yorkers struggling with high inflation. This marks the first time a Muslim has been elected mayor of America's largest city, New York.
His key campaign pledges included freezing rents for 'rent-stabilized apartments' over which New York City has control, raising the minimum wage, expanding free bus service, and increasing access to free childcare. He promised to fund these initiatives by increasing taxes on the wealthy.
Meanwhile, President Trump labeled Mamdani a 'communist' and warned that if Mamdani were elected, New York City would face a complete economic and social disaster. He further stated that he would cut off federal funding to New York City should Mamdani take office, signaling future conflict.
