Korea Consumer Agency Conducts Safety and Performance Tests on 11 Types of Pads and Mats
The Korea Consumer Agency announced on July 31 that it conducted tests and evaluations on the cooling performance, safety, and labeling of 11 types of infant cooling pads and mats that are popular among consumers. The results showed that some products exceeded safety standards, requiring consumer caution.
According to the agency, two products?Bebenubo and Pomonde?demonstrated excellent performance in terms of immediate cooling sensation, heat transfer, and sweat absorption. Three products?Bebedeco, Agabang, and AllerMann?showed outstanding heat transfer performance. Bebedeco and AllerMann were also highlighted for their superior absorption capabilities.
Bebenubo Exceeds Standards for Phthalate Plasticizers and Nonylphenol
All tested products showed no issues with color change due to saliva and sweat, or deformation caused by washing. This test evaluated changes in color, dimensions, and the degree of damage to the products after washing.
However, some products were found to exceed the standards for nonylphenol and pH. The Bebenubo Hypernic Cool Mat detected nonylphenol and phthalate plasticizers above the standard levels in the area that comes into contact with the floor. Long-term exposure to nonylphenol and phthalate plasticizers can cause endocrine disruption and reproductive dysfunction.
The MummyCoolCool product exceeded the standard pH range of 4.0?7.5 at the edge of the mat, making pre-washing essential before use.
MummyCoolCool Also Plans to Exchange or Refund Non-compliant pH Products
In response, the Korea Consumer Agency required With& Co., the operator of Bebenubo, to dispose of all affected products. The agency also explained that it received plans for exchange and refund for products sold between December 20, 2024, and April 4, 2025. Rabbit&LinMom, the operator of MummyCoolCool, also submitted plans to the agency for exchange and refund if consumers raise complaints about mats produced in October 2024 that do not meet pH standards.
Furthermore, the Pomonde Reversible Quilted Pad did not meet labeling requirements. According to the Electrical Appliances and Household Goods Safety Management Act, products must indicate blend ratio and manufacturer name, but Pomonde products lacked this information. Pomonde explained that they improved this issue last month in June by attaching stickers and other measures.
Bebedeco and Agabang Products Offer Excellent Performance for Price
All tested products used 100% polyethylene for both the fabric and filling. Thickness, weight, and dimensions varied significantly among products. The thickest product was the Bebenubo Hypernic Cool Mat at 15.2 mm. The thinnest was the Bebedeco Himalaya Puppy Cooling Pad at 3.0 mm. The lightest product was the Pomonde Reversible Quilted Pad at 610g, while the heaviest was the Bambubebe Circus Cooling Modal Cool Mat at 1600g.
In terms of price, the most expensive pads were the Bambubebe Cooling Pad (163,000 KRW), Pomonde Reversible Quilted Pad (137,900 KRW), and Bebenubo Hypernic Cool Pad (129,000 KRW). The most affordable was the Bebedeco Himalaya Puppy Cooling Pad at 69,000 KRW, followed by the Agabang Coolnaejindong Cooling Pad at 89,000 KRW. For mats, the Bambubebe Circus Cooling Modal Cool Mat was the most expensive at 167,000 KRW, while the MummyCoolCool Mat was the cheapest at 91,000 KRW.
The Korea Consumer Agency selected the Bebedeco Himalaya Puppy Cooling Pad and the Agabang Coolnaejindong Cooling Pad as the best value-for-money products.
