Wearing a black suit and a purple tie, President Trump waved as he disembarked from Air Force One.
From the Chinese side, Vice President Han Zheng, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng, and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu welcomed President Trump at the airport. Children holding bouquets of flowers were also waiting to greet him.
President Trump smiled brightly as he received the bouquet and briefly conversed with Vice President Han and other officials.
When more than 300 youths waved American and Chinese flags and chanted "Welcome! Welcome!", President Trump responded by raising his fist. He then boarded a prepared vehicle and headed to his accommodation.
During his stay, President Trump is scheduled to stay at the Four Seasons Hotel near the U.S. Embassy in China. Crowds of Chinese citizens and foreign correspondents gathered around the hotel, forming a long line as early as 6 p.m., two hours before President Trump’s arrival in Beijing.
On the morning of the second day of his visit, the 14th, President Trump will hold a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two leaders are meeting face-to-face for the first time in about six months, after their previous encounter in Busan last October during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
During the summit, a wide range of key issues are expected to be discussed, including tariffs and trade, as well as matters related to Taiwan and Iran. There is also keen interest as to whether the North Korean nuclear issue and the Korean Peninsula will be raised.
After the summit, President Trump and President Xi are scheduled to tour Beijing’s Temple of Heaven Park together, and later in the evening they will attend a state banquet at the Great Hall of the People.
On the final day of the visit, the 15th, the two leaders will continue their discussions over tea and lunch meetings at Zhongnanhai, President Xi’s office and official residence. Afterwards, President Trump will conclude his two-night, three-day visit to China and return home.
