Son Disappears on His Way to School... Father Said "Please Take Care of This" [Japan Human Side]
Disappeared After Going to School for Graduation Ceremony
Spread of Misinformation Compounds the Incident
Japanese media have been covering the ongoing child disappearance case in Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture throughout this week. A child who had reportedly gone to school for a graduation ceremony vanished without a trace. The investigation stalled for some time, and it was only after three weeks that the child’s body was discovered. Police questioned the father, who reportedly confessed to the crime during police interrogation. The shocking incident has sent shockwaves across Japan.
We Only Hoped for Safety... How Did the Incident Occur?
Yuki Adachi went to his elementary school at around 8 a.m. on the 23rd of last month to attend his graduation ceremony. His father drove him to the school parking lot, but Adachi never actually entered the school. He did not appear on any of the school’s security cameras. When he failed to show up even after the graduation ceremony, the homeroom teacher called the mother at 11:45 a.m. to inform her of the child’s disappearance.
In an effort to find the missing child, Japanese media and Nantan City police repeatedly displayed contact numbers for witnesses at the bottom of news reports. Despite these efforts, there were no leads until the search was expanded on the 29th of last month, when the child’s bag was found in a wooded area 3 kilometers northwest of the elementary school. Police checked public transportation security footage, but there was no evidence that the child had traveled by train or bus. Despite mobilizing 1,000 police officers and acting on over 200 tips, no additional clues about the child were found.

News broke that the police had immediately identified a suspect. The person police requested an arrest warrant for was none other than the father. During police questioning, he reportedly admitted, "I did it." This is the sequence of events as known so far.
The Suspect Actively Cooperated with the Investigation... No One Expected It
At first, there was criticism of the police force, with questions such as "Why didn’t the police immediately identify a family member as the suspect?" and "Why did it take three weeks to find the child?" However, there were reasons why the investigation faced difficulties. The suspect actively cooperated with the investigation. According to reports from Japanese media such as TBS, firefighters deployed for the search stated that the father thanked them for their efforts and bowed, saying, "Thank you for your concern," and "Please do your best."
However, as time passed, the clues that were found only deepened the mystery. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the location where the bag was discovered six days after the child went missing had already been searched multiple times. Even if it had been missed earlier, given the weather conditions and rainfall during that period, the bag would likely have been wet or damaged. However, the bag showed almost no noticeable contamination.
Later, the shoe was found on a mountain 5 kilometers away from where the bag was discovered. Japanese experts analyzed whether an animal might have carried it away, but pointed out that, given the circumstances, it was unlikely the child had moved there on his own. The police also stated, "It is strange that no clues are being found in an area where people do go in and out." Based on this, suspicions arose that someone may have intentionally moved the items or the body.
It was also revealed that the suspect was the child’s stepfather, having remarried the mother. Testimonies from those around them indicated that the relationship with the child was not good. According to the Asahi Shimbun, the child had told people around him that he "did not get along with his uncle (stepfather)." As this information accumulated, police began narrowing their investigation to the family, especially those close to the child, including the father. When the body was found and the case shifted from a disappearance to a criminal investigation, police focused their questioning on the father, who confessed to the crime. It remains unclear whether the suspect intentionally moved items such as the shoes or bag during the investigation, as this is still under investigation.
False Information Spreads... The Community in Shock
This incident has shocked the local community. The school the child attended was temporarily closed, and according to NHK, although classes have resumed, some students are too traumatized to return to school. Additionally, during the three weeks that the child was missing, a great deal of false information spread online, becoming a serious issue. Even though Japanese media dispatched reporters to the scene every day for three weeks, false information continued to circulate on social networking services (SNS).

There were also false claims such as "The suspect is not Japanese," or "The parents work for a company that handles corpses," as well as fake news advertisements claiming "The perpetrator has been caught. Check the link below."
However, it has not been clarified whether both parents were involved in the crime. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the parents canvassed the area in search of the missing child. A self-employed person who met them testified that "The woman desperately handed out flyers and asked to be contacted, while the man remained silent." Of course, since these people are suspects, nothing can be concluded at this stage.

The incident, which began with hopes for the child’s safe return, ended in tragedy. During this process, unfounded speculation was consumed as if it were fact. The Japanese economic media Toyo Keizai criticized this phenomenon, saying, "It is unlikely that non-experts would be ahead of the police, and the police only withheld information for investigative reasons or due to insufficient evidence," adding, "Although it may sound harsh, it seems as if people are treating the incident as a form of entertainment." This incident prompts us to reflect again on what adults have done to the child.
