Shinsegae Department Store Hosts Exhibition Offering Modern Reinterpretation of the Sarangbang
"INNER ROOMS" Opens April 30...Simultaneous Exhibition Across Two Floors at The Heritage
Over 40 Artists Reinterpret Traditional Objects and Soban, Exploring Themes of Relationships and Inner Reflection
Shinsegae Department Store announced on April 29 that it will present the exhibition "INNER ROOMS: Rooms of the Inner Self," a modern reinterpretation of the sarangbang (traditional Korean study room) from the Joseon Dynasty, at its main store, The Heritage.
The exhibition will run from April 30 to June 25, and for the first time since the opening of The Heritage, it will be held simultaneously on both the 4th and 5th floors.
This exhibition is notable for reconstructing the functions and meanings of the sarangbang space from the perspective of contemporary artists. While the sarangbang in the past was a place where contemplation, interaction, and creativity coexisted, the exhibition aims to provide an opportunity to reflect on modern relationships and the inner self through this theme.
On the 4th floor, works reinterpret various objects typically found in traditional sarangbangs—such as gobi (traditional screens), gat (traditional hats), and chaekgado (still-life paintings of bookshelves)—using modern materials. The focus is on pieces that transform traditional artifacts into new forms with materials like aluminum, leather, hanji (traditional Korean paper), and hemp cloth.
The 5th floor exhibition centers on the theme of "soban" (traditional Korean tray tables). By showcasing regional varieties such as Najuban, Tongyeongban, and Haejuban, the exhibition introduces local lifestyles and aesthetics, further connecting them with contemporary creative works.
