Covestro Embraces Waste Heat Recycling... Achieves 40,000-Ton Carbon Reduction
Investment of Tens of Millions of Euros... Largest Project in Company History
Application of Waste Heat Reuse Technology in TDI Process
Covestro, a global advanced materials company, has launched a large-scale investment to improve energy efficiency across its entire production process.
On May 20, Covestro announced that through this project, it expects to save several hundred GWh of energy annually and reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by more than 40,000 tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 20,000 cars. The investment, amounting to tens of millions of euros (worth several tens of billions of won), marks the largest energy efficiency improvement project in Covestro's history.
The company is enhancing energy efficiency by recycling waste heat generated during production. In particular, during the production of toluene diisocyanate (TDI), which is used in products such as mattresses and car seats, steam generated in the process is reintroduced into the system, allowing the reuse of low-temperature energy that was previously difficult to utilize. With this approach, the company aims to reduce both energy consumption and carbon emissions simultaneously.
Torsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Covestro, stated, "Energy efficiency is a key factor in achieving climate neutrality and transitioning to a circular economy. The more we reduce energy use, the greater the environmental benefits and economic competitiveness."
Covestro has reduced its energy consumption by approximately 40% from 2005 to 2022, and the company has set a goal to further reduce energy consumption per unit of product by 20% compared to 2020 levels by 2030.
