LG Innotek Partners with Kakao Mobility to Develop 'Autonomous Driving Solutions'... Sensing Modules to Be Applied
Combining Innotek's Sensing Technology with Kakao's Software
Joint R&D to Secure Real-World Driving Data
Internalizing Autonomous Driving Technology and Advancing into Physical AI
LG Innotek is partnering with Kakao Mobility to develop autonomous driving solutions.
On May 20, LG Innotek announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kakao Mobility for cooperation on developing autonomous driving solutions. The company explained that this partnership will accelerate its efforts to penetrate the physical AI (artificial intelligence) sensing market.
Under the agreement, the two companies will combine LG Innotek's outstanding sensing technology with Kakao Mobility's autonomous driving data collection infrastructure and software capabilities to jointly develop autonomous driving solutions.
The autonomous driving solutions to be developed will feature LG Innotek's high-performance sensing modules—including cameras, radar, and LiDAR—optimized for Kakao Mobility's platform services, and will incorporate Kakao Mobility's software.
Min Joon, CTO (Senior Vice President) of LG Innotek, Sejin Oh, CSO (Executive Vice President) of LG Innotek, Jinkyu Kim, Head of Physical AI Division (Vice President) at Kakao Mobility, and Kyujin Ahn, Head of Business Division (Vice President) at Kakao Mobility, are taking a commemorative photo at the “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony for Autonomous Driving Solution Development Cooperation” recently held at LG Innotek headquarters in Magok, Gangseo-gu. Through this agreement, LG Innotek will receive real-world driving data from Kakao Mobility, aiming to further enhance the performance and completeness of its sensing modules, such as cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
Kakao Mobility plans to integrate LG Innotek's sensing technology into its "Integrated Autonomous Driving Data Management System," which automates the entire process of data collection, training, and deployment for autonomous driving. By leveraging LG Innotek's sensing modules, which employ world-class optical technology, the company intends to collect high-quality data and further advance this system.
Ryu Geungseon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, stated, "Through our collaboration with LG Innotek, we will secure high-quality driving data and accelerate the acquisition and internalization of core end-to-end (E2E) autonomous driving technologies. We will continue to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea's autonomous driving ecosystem through strategic partnerships that combine software and hardware."
President Moon Hyuksu commented, "Since the completeness of autonomous driving ultimately depends on data, our collaboration with Kakao Mobility presents an excellent opportunity to advance LG Innotek's sensing technology. In addition to autonomous driving, we aim to become a top-tier player in physical AI sensing by providing customized sensing solutions in new fields such as robotics and drones."
Meanwhile, LG Innotek is expanding its differentiated optical technology, accumulated in the smartphone sector, to physical AI fields such as autonomous driving and robotics. In particular, the company possesses all the core technologies for cameras, radar, and LiDAR—the essential sensors for autonomous driving—which enables it to offer a variety of sensing solutions tailored to customer needs. LG Innotek has announced its goal of growing its mobility sensing solution business to 2 trillion won in sales by 2030.
