KRW 13.39 Billion in Compensation for 48,000 Residents Suffering from Suwon Airfield Noise
Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will pay a total of KRW 13,394,000,000 in compensation to 48,663 residents suffering from noise damage in designated noise countermeasure areas near Suwon Airfield (K-13).
From May 12 to 14, Suwon City held the "1st Local Noise Countermeasure Committee" to determine the payment of military noise compensation for 2026 and finalized this year's scale of compensation for military noise damage.
The military noise compensation is distributed on a differentiated basis to residents living in noise countermeasure areas, taking into account various factors each year, such as noise category and payment rate, length of residence, timing of move-in, and location of workplace.
Suwon City's noise countermeasure area is the region surrounding Suwon Airfield (K-13), designated by the Ministry of National Defense in 2021, and includes parts of Seryu 2-dong, Pyeong-dong, Seodun-dong, Guun-dong, Gwonsun 2-dong, and Gokseon-dong. This year, reflecting the revised enforcement ordinance of 2025, a total of 135 additional homes, including houses on the boundary within the noise contour and adjacent single-family homes, have been newly included.
The finalized compensation amount will be individually notified to recipients by the end of May. Suwon City plans to become the first local government in the country to send out compensation notifications collectively via mobile electronic notification (Kakao Alimtok) for its military noise compensation work. For those who do not check the Alimtok message, separate notifications will also be sent by registered mail.
Residents who disagree with the determined compensation amount may file an objection within 60 days from the date they receive the notification. The compensation will be paid individually at the end of August, and cases with objections will be re-examined and paid around the end of October.
