A total of 105,445 citizens from seven local governments—Yongin, Seongnam, Hwaseong, Gwangju, Anseong, Cheongju, and Jincheon—participated in this signature campaign. The council has been conducting a joint petition drive since March, and for now, submitted the petitions from Yongin, Hwaseong, and Gwangju. Additional signatures currently being collected in Jincheon County and Anseong City will be submitted in the future.
The JTX is a metropolitan express railway project connecting the Seoul metropolitan area and the Chungcheong region. Since September of last year, the Korea Development Institute (KDI) has been conducting a preliminary feasibility study for private investment.
The deputy mayors emphasized that, despite the rapid population growth in the southern metropolitan area, the railway infrastructure remains insufficient, highlighting the JTX as a core project to resolve transportation inconvenience and promote balanced regional development.
On the same day, Yongin City, together with Seongnam City, Hwaseong Special City, and Osan City, also delivered a petition signed by citizens requesting the inclusion of the Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad, the Gyeonggi Southern East-West Line, and the extension of the Gyeonggang Line in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
A total of 79,839 citizens participated in this petition campaign.
The Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad is a 50.7-kilometer line connecting Jamsil Sports Complex in Seoul with Pangyo in Seongnam, Sinbong and Seongbok-dong in Suji-gu, Yongin, Gwanggyo in Suwon, and Bongdam in Hwaseong.
The Gyeonggi Southern East-West Line is an 89.4-kilometer railway project that connects Bubal-eup in Icheon to Wonsam-myeon in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, and advanced system semiconductor national industrial complexes in Idong and Namsa-eup, then continues to Jeongokhang in Hwaseong.
The Gyeonggang Line extension project is a conventional railway project that will connect Gwangju Station to Namsa-eup in Yongin, covering approximately 38 kilometers.
Yongin City and the other local governments stated that expanding the railway network in southern Gyeonggi is not only essential for improving citizens' mobility, but also a prerequisite for balanced regional development and establishing a foundation for future growth. They requested the prompt implementation of the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Project and the inclusion of these projects in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
