Beyond Baseball to Culture... Gijang County Accelerates Korean Baseball Hall of Fame Project
From Immersive XR and VR Experiences to a Smart Storage System
South Korea's Only Public Baseball Museum Aims to Open in 2027
Gijang County has officially begun work on developing exhibition content for the "Korean Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum)," which is the only public baseball museum in South Korea.
On May 14, Gijang County (County Mayor Jeong Jongbok) held a kickoff report meeting for the "Korean Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum) Exhibition Direction, Production, and Installation Project," according to an announcement on May 19.
The Korean Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum) is being developed as a multi-purpose cultural space in Cheonggwang-ri, Ilgwang-eup, Gijang County. The facility will be constructed as a three-story building above ground with one basement floor, with a total floor area of approximately 2,998 square meters. It will include the Hall of Fame, permanent exhibition halls, educational spaces, and more, and is being promoted as a tripartite agreement project among Gijang County, the City of Busan, and the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).
This project aims to develop exhibition content for the Hall of Fame and permanent exhibition halls, with a total project budget of approximately 4.1 billion won. The work is scheduled to continue through March 2027.
The report meeting was attended by officials from Gijang County and Busan City, as well as expert advisory committee members from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the National Busan Science Museum, the National Maritime Museum, Dankook University, and representatives from the project contractor. They discussed the direction for organizing the exhibition content.
Participants agreed on the need to go beyond simple historical displays and to create immersive content that allows visitors to experience the history and culture of Korean baseball. In particular, there was consensus that the space should be designed not just as a place to consume "baseball content," but as an environment where visitors can experience and empathize with "baseball culture."
They also discussed the importance of developing distinctive "killer content" that can only be experienced at the Korean Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as strategies for incorporating immersive technologies such as XR and VR into the exhibition. The need to establish a smart storage system for the systematic management of artifacts and materials was also mentioned.
In addition, various operational strategies for the complex cultural space were discussed, including programs linked to the induction ceremony, the creation of amenities such as cafes and food trucks, and the establishment of a sustainable operational system.
