Venezuela Abruptly Extradites Former Minister Saab, "Maduro Regime's Secret Funds Manager," to the U.S.
Key Architect Behind Sanctions Evasion and Secret Funds Management
Evidence of Strengthened Cooperation Between Interim Rodriguez Administration and U.S. Authorities
Venezuela has abruptly extradited former Minister of Industry Alex Saab (54), a close confidant of former President Nicolas Maduro who was known as the regime's chief manager of secret funds, to the United States. In diplomatic circles, this move is being interpreted as a clear signal of the blossoming relationship between the interim administration of President Delcy Rodriguez, who assumed power after the arrest of the anti-U.S. Maduro, and the U.S. government.

Saab is a key figure suspected of amassing and managing astronomical amounts of secret funds for the Maduro family by inflating transactions through a network of shell companies and food import businesses.
This is Saab's second time being sent to the United States. In 2020, he was arrested in Cape Verde, Africa, by Interpol and extradited to the U.S. to stand trial on charges such as money laundering. However, in 2023, he was released through a prisoner swap involving American detainees held in Venezuela, made a high-profile return to Caracas, and even secured the post of Minister of Industry. His once-solid political standing collapsed rapidly this January when U.S. authorities unexpectedly arrested former President Maduro.

Interim President Rodriguez, considered pro-U.S., completely ousted Saab from the corridors of power as part of a government reshuffle after taking office. Then, in February, following a joint operation by U.S. and Venezuelan intelligence agencies, Saab was arrested at his home in Caracas and ultimately handed over to the U.S. authorities. The U.S. Department of Justice believes that Saab holds the critical key to uncovering the secret financial flows and hidden assets of former President Maduro, and his testimony is expected to serve as a powerful "smoking gun" in the ongoing sedition and corruption trial against Maduro in a New York court.
