Netflix Launches Generative AI Studio for Animation Production
Expanding AI Utilization Beyond Post-Production to the Creative Stage
Netflix is accelerating the development of its next-generation animation production system using generative AI.
According to IT media outlets such as Engadget and The Verge on May 15 (local time), it was reported that Netflix established an in-house studio dedicated to generative AI-based content production called "INKubator" in March.
This studio is led by Serena Iyer, formerly of DreamWorks Animation, and is currently recruiting talent in various fields, including producers, technical directors, software engineers, and computer graphics artists.
According to the job posting, the studio plans to produce short-form animations and special video content, and it mentioned the possibility of expanding its work to feature-length animation production in the future.
With Netflix recently achieving commercial success with animations such as "K-Pop Demon Hunters" and "Swapped," its efforts to actively incorporate generative AI into the animation sector—which typically requires significant production costs and time—are drawing attention.
Although the conflict between AI technology and creators remains a sensitive issue in Hollywood, Netflix has previously demonstrated its commitment to utilizing AI.
In March, Netflix acquired Interpositive, an AI startup founded by actor Ben Affleck.
Interpositive is a company that possesses technology to use AI to address missing footage, inappropriate backgrounds, and incorrect lighting during the film production process.
However, while Interpositive mainly applies AI in the post-production stage of video creation, INKubator stands out in that it leverages generative AI from the early content creation stage.
