Cheonghae Unit 48th Contingent "Wang Geon" Sets Sail
Participation in EU Naval Force Somalia Maritime Security Operations
The 48th contingent of the Republic of Korea Navy's Cheonghae Unit (Somalia Escort Task Group), the "Wang Geon" (DDH-II, 4,400-ton class), set sail from Busan on May 15 for its overseas deployment.
Since its first mission as the 5th contingent of the Cheonghae Unit in 2010, the Wang Geon has now been assigned to its ninth overseas deployment. The 48th contingent consists of the Wang Geon crew, the task group headquarters staff, a boarding and search team composed of special warfare personnel (UDT/SEAL), an aviation unit operating maritime operation helicopters (Lynx), and a support team including Marine Corps, medical, and maintenance personnel. Approximately 80 members, or about 30% of the 48th contingent, are experienced personnel who have previously participated in Cheonghae Unit deployments.
The Wang Geon, which set sail on this day, will relieve the 47th contingent's Dae Jo Yeong (DDH-II, 4,400-ton class) in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia, and will then undertake missions such as the safe escort and navigation support of vessels. In particular, the Navy stated that the contingent will protect Korean nationals in emergency situations and participate in maritime security operations led by the Combined Maritime Forces and the EU Naval Force Somalia, thereby supporting national policy objectives.
